Embedded Software Engineer – Yocto/Linux – Bristol Area – £55,000

I’m currently recruiting for an Embedded Software Engineer to join a rapidly growing technology and R&D organisation in the Bristol area.
The position will focus on developing embedded Linux systems using Yocto, alongside work involving C/C++, Linux platforms, System-on-Chip devices and communications technologies. You’ll contribute to technically challenging R&D programmes spanning research, prototyping, implementation, integration and testing.
The Role
As an Embedded Software Engineer, you’ll help develop Linux-based software platforms for advanced communications, RF and sensor-processing applications.
Responsibilities will include:
- Developing and maintaining custom embedded Linux distributions using the Yocto Project
- Creating and maintaining Yocto recipes, layers, images and Board Support Packages
- Configuring, building and debugging Linux systems for embedded hardware
- Developing embedded software using C and C++
- Supporting Linux kernel, bootloader and device-driver integration
- Developing software for microprocessors and System-on-Chip devices
- Integrating hardware interfaces, sensors and communications peripherals
- Supporting software-defined radio and digital signal-processing applications
- Rapidly developing prototypes and pre-production systems
- Producing technical requirements, architecture and design documentation
- Supporting system integration, verification and technical trials
- Working directly with customers to understand requirements and propose effective technical solutions
The Ideal Embedded Software Engineer
You’ll ideally have at least three years’ commercial embedded software experience, including hands-on experience with Yocto and embedded Linux.
Relevant experience may include:
- Yocto Project, BitBake and OpenEmbedded
- Developing Yocto recipes, layers and custom Linux images
- Embedded Linux development and debugging
- Board Support Packages and hardware bring-up
- Linux kernel configuration and development
- Bootloaders such as U-Boot
- Device drivers and low-level hardware interfaces
- Embedded C and C++
- ARM-based microprocessors or System-on-Chip platforms
- Python or shell scripting
- Cross-compilation and build systems
- Git and continuous integration
- Software-defined radio, DSP, RF or communications systems
- FPGA or VHDL exposure would be advantageous
- Prototype development, integration and system testing
