Opto-Mechanical Design Engineer | Optical Systems | £50k - £70k + Bonus | Hybrid + Flexi Hours - Hampshire

I'm working with a pioneering manufacturer of advanced optical systems used in cutting-edge research and microscopy. They're looking to hire an Opto-Mechanical Design Engineer to join their R&D team – someone who enjoys solving complex engineering problems and wants to make a real-world impact through science and innovation.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a collaborative, purpose-driven R&D environment focused on sustainable technology.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Developing optical components and devices

  • Investigating how design choices affect real-world performance

  • Collaborating with optical, mechanical, and electronics engineers

  • Feeding back into system design and supporting manufacturing handover

  • Getting hands-on with microscopes, sensors, thermal testing and more

What you’ll need:

  • MSc (or PhD) in Physics or a related STEM discipline

  • A passion for multidisciplinary science and product development

  • Appreciation of geometrical optics and electronic systems

  • Strong data analysis skills (Excel, VBA, Pivot Tables, database links)

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work independently and in a team

Bonus points if you have:

  • Experience with microscopes or test equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters)

  • Optical design experience using Zemax

  • Knowledge of product validation and lifetime testing
